History and architectural features īuilt shortly after 1800 on the banks of Cobbs Creek, by Israel Whelen, Jr., the hall was the residence of the master of the Nitre Hall Powder Mills, which has long since been torn down. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Nitre Hall is a nineteenth-century, American building that is located in Haverford Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The Haverford Township Community now enjoys this full-fledged, modern YMCA that has grown into one of the busiest in the nation.39★9′1″N 75☁7′9″W / 39.98361°N 75.28583°W / 39.98361 -75.28583 The Haverford Area YMCA was completed on-time, within budget, and with zero OSHA recordables. JJ White also completed sitework including the parking lots and landscaping. JJ White also installed full Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing systems with integrated climate/humidity control systems, 16 Trane package units, major underground power/data integration systems, and “smart building” automation systems. The structural glass facade design envelopes an elevated mezzanine running track, atrium, offices with high end finishes, flex classrooms, studios, lounges, gymnasium, swimming pools, locker rooms, and steam rooms. JJ White installed a “cupolex” aerated floor system, 230 tons of steel, and 2,700 cubic yards of concrete. JJ White maintained an aggressive schedule in order to complete the job even while losing 2 months to permit issues out of the company’s hands. The site of the YMCA/Community Center was situated on a reclaimed “brown field” site, adding to the project’s already challenging 15 month time frame and monetary scale. The YMCA set out to create a facility that could be enjoyed by all members of the community regardless of age while also providing a wide variety of activities. JJ White was selected as the General Contractor for the YMCA’s plan to construct the first ever community YMCA facility in Haverford Township.
